Understanding Total Asphalt’s Products and Services

As one of the trusted asphalt suppliers in the area, we can produce between 40-80 tonnes of hot and cold mix asphalt per operating hour through our mobile asphalt batching plant, ready for pick up or delivery to predetermined sites. 

We also spray emulsion and hot bitumen for single and two (2) coat seals. A single coat seal is a single pass over a surface with either Emulsion or Bitumen and spreading a one size aggregate/stone onto the product. A two-coat seal refers to two (2) passes over a surface with Emulsion or Bitumen and spreading two separate sizes of aggregate/stone onto the product.

Moreover, we have fully equipped vehicles to carry out an extensive range of asphalt and bitumen spraying. Our fleet currently consists of:

• 2 x Bobcats - 4SDK8 and 5SDK8 for general earthworks with broom, forks and ripper attachments.
• 2 x Asphalt Pavers – ANTEC & BITELLI BB50.
• 6 x Rollers – 1 x Articulated (Hamm HD 14) and 1 x Road (HAMM HD 12), 2 x Multi’s (Sakai and Hamm), also 2 x Pedestrian Rollers for small and finishing tasks.
• 7 x Trucks – Spreaders, Tippers and Spray trucks for Emulsion & Bitumen. Also, a crew truck can manage potholes to main road construction. All vehicles can tow floats and trailers, allowing flexibility for the mobilisation of equipment.
• Plate compactors - for general pothole repairs.

How Does Asphalt Paving Work?

Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) is a combination of approximately 95% stone, sand, or aggregate/gravel bound together by asphalt cement. It is heated aggregate, combined and mixed with the aggregate at around 160 degrees C at a batching facility. The mix is then loaded into trucks for transport to the paving site. The trucks dump the mixture into hoppers located at the front of the paving machines. 

The asphalt is spread at predetermined heights and widths by paver/screed and then compacted using a heavy-duty industrial roller driven over the newly laid asphalt. Traffic is generally permitted on the pavement as soon as the pavement has cooled.
